Statement
Tadahiro Gunji explores the territory between painting and sculpture. His current body of work centers on a series titled Collectivity. Each work is composed of multiple parts. Yet what draws Gunji's attention is not the parts themselves, but the gaps that emerge between them. These gaps become contours, giving form to the work. He calls this condition in-between. The idea is rooted in the Japanese concept of ma — a sense of space that is not emptiness, but something alive with relation and presence: the interval between objects, between people, between time and space.
Gunji was born in Japan and continues to work between New York and Japan. Moving back and forth between different cultures has turned his attention away from boundaries themselves, toward the relationships that arise in the space between them. Within his works, geometric and organic lines, painting and sculpture, the man-made and the natural coexist. Rather than resolving these oppositions, he attends to the tension and balance that live between them. His materials are resin and vintage paper, yellowed by the passage of time. The resin absorbs its surroundings, drawing the viewer and the space into the work itself. The vintage paper already holds the traces of time, and the resin too will continue to change as years pass. Gunji's work is an attempt to make visible the relationships that arise between objects, between a person and a work, between the past and the present. He believes that meaning and beauty do not reside in completed forms — but appear in the in-between, and within time.
